Passport and Visa
Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your departure from the US.
ESTA and Visa Information:
ESTA: Travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries may apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to enter the US. It is advised to check eligibility and apply for an ESTA well in advance of travel, although applications can be submitted up to 72 hours before departure. An approved ESTA is valid for two years and permits stays of 90 days within a 180-day period. Get more information here: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
Visa: Visitors not eligible for an ESTA may require a visa to enter the US. Information on visa applications can be found through official channels. Due to potentially long processing times, it is recommended to start the visa application process at least six months before the intended travel date.
International Flights
For our international guests, the most convenient entry point into the United States for Milwaukee is to fly to either Milwaukee or Chicago. We advise scheduling any layovers outside of the United States due to the unpredictability of wait times at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Should your travel plans include a layover in the U.S., we recommend allowing at least 4 hours between flights.
Usually it is best to buy the flights 3-6 months in advance. A good deal on flights from Oslo to Chicago has historically been around 5000 NOK (approximately 500 USD) with SAS. To help you find the best deals on flights, we recommend setting up alerts on Google Flights. Here's how to do it:
- Go to Google Flights.
- Enter your departure city and Chicago as your destination.
- Select your preferred travel dates.
- Click on the "Track prices" toggle to turn on flight tracking.
- Sign in with your Google account to save your search and receive email updates when prices change for flights that match your criteria.
Bypass long lines at the US border: Mobile Passport Control (MPC)
For a faster and more convenient entry into the United States, we recommend downloading and using the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app. MPC is a free, official app provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that allows eligible travelers to submit their passport information and customs declaration electronically before speaking with a CBP officer. We typically add this information while still on the plane, shortly after landing, so it's ready to go when we disembark. This expedites the process at the border. The app is available for iOS and Android devices, and it can be used at most major U.S. airports, including Chicago O'Hare (ORD). Transportation
Once you arrive in Chicago, the easiest way to travel to Milwaukee is by car. Public transit is not the best, but doable.
